Taking a cab to Orchard area should take you only about 30 mins with a relative smooth ride. Out of the airport, you should be on the expressway marked 'City', any other way, the driver is taking you for a ride. From East to West is less than 50km, so go figure. Use that distance as a reference to any other parts of Singapore.
